The mosquito season is just around the corner. Those flying little insects can be a real pain in the neck. Not only they are annoying, mosquitos are known disease carriers. They can be a threat to your family, so just sticking up with the problem is not a good decision.
In order to avoid getting mosquito infestation at your home, you have to take preventative steps before it even happens. This can be a little tricky because you can’t eradicate something that isn’t there.
Don’t worry, that’s why we are here. Here’s how to take care of the mosquitos.
How to get rid of mosquitoes outdoors
If you start seeing mosquitos in and around your house then it might be a trouble waiting to happen. Most likely the first signs will be in your backyard and around the house. Still, one or two mosquitos are normal for the summer season.
If you are looking for the best treatment for the outdoors that works and it’s safe for you then it may want to look at plants that are natural repellents. Here’s what you can plant in your backyard in order to remove mosquitoes:
- Lemon Weed
- Pitcher Plant
- Lemon Eucalyptus
- Floss Flower
- Lemon Thyme
- Nodding Onion
- Sweet Fern
- Tea Tree
- Stone Root
If plants and gardening isn’t your first choice and you want something easier to manage and something that will do the job faster than a plant. The things that you should be looking for are candles, fog diffusers and torches. You can also invest into electric pest control devices that will zap the little buggers immediately.
Depending on the amount of money you are willing to spend on mosquito control different devices will suit you. If you don’t experience big problems with mosquitos around your home and you just want to keep the few that there are away then we would suggest you use torches and candles.
Short term foggers and insecticides
As we mentioned above depending on the size of the infestation you might want to use insecticides that aren’t so strong. Most insecticides are made out of citronella extract. Mosquitoes loathe the smell of this plant. The only problem with foggers and insecticides is that they aren’t really effective on windy days.
Long-term insecticides against mosquitoes
If the problem is big and you suffer from bad mosquito infestation you’ll need to take action. Long-term insecticides are the only choice in this case. Lambda-cyhalothrin or cyfluthrin will do great job repelling mosquitoes from your house. You need to spray the chemical onto man-made objects like your deck and close around your house.
Misters to kill mosquitoes
If everything else fails then it’s time to get the big guns out. Misters spray a fine mist over a set area. They kill the mosquitoes immediately at contact. The mist will keep the nasty flying insects away for a couple of hours. However, if you aren’t keen on the idea of having your backyard full of chemicals then take a look at the next method.
Using traps to kill mosquitoes
Mosquito traps work by mimicking a breathing creature. They spread CO2. Mosquitoes are attracted to it and they get in the trap.
One thing that you should keep in mind is that a mosquito trap isn’t going to be all that effective. If there are people and animals around they will also be attracted to them. However, that doesn’t mean it’s not an effective mosquito control method. Run it when mosquitoes are out and soon enough you will start seeing results.
